Braille, or how six dots in two columns gave the blind a language
In January 1812, a three-year-old in Coupvray, twenty-two miles east of Paris, drove a harness awl into his left eye. The wound infected both eyes. By age five, Louis Braille was completely blind. By fifteen, he had invented the writing system still used by six million people today (Wikipedia).
At the Royal Institute for Blind Youth in Paris, where Braille enrolled at ten, books arrived by Valentin Haüy’s method: raised Latin letters pressed into heavy paper, expensive to produce, impossible to write. A student could trace sentences with his fingers but could not generate a single word of his own. Reading and writing — the paired acts that make someone literate — were split, one side permanently out of reach.
The missing half arrived in 1821 in the form of an army officer. Captain Charles Barbier de la Serre had devised écriture nocturne, night writing, to let soldiers read messages in the dark without lighting a lantern. His system used twelve raised dots in two tall columns on thick card (Wikipedia). Barbier visited the Institute to demonstrate it. The system worked in principle. In practice, the fingertip could not take in a twelve-position cell without sliding; the letter only resolved after the whole shape had been scanned.
Braille was twelve when Barbier visited. By 1824, age fifteen, he had halved the cell to six dots — two columns, three rows — and mapped every combination to a letter, numeral, or punctuation mark. A single fingertip could read a character in one touch. He published the first formal version in 1829, extended it to musical notation, and revised it in 1837, dropping the dashes that blurred under a moving finger (National Geographic).
The Institute’s reaction was not what you might hope. When Pierre-Armand Dufau became director in 1840, he banned the code outright and punished students caught using it (National Geographic). His logic, never stated plainly, was not hard to infer: blind students who could read and write at speed were harder to keep dependent on sighted teachers. The ban lasted until 1844, when a public demonstration at the school’s new building made suppression untenable: students on the dot system read and wrote faster than anyone on embossed print.
Braille never saw the formal victory. He died of tuberculosis on January 6, 1852, at forty-three. No newspaper published an obituary. The Institute adopted his system two years later, in 1854 (Wikipedia). In 1952, France moved his remains to the Panthéon, where they rest alongside Voltaire and Victor Hugo — although, at the request of his family, his hands stayed in Coupvray (National Geographic).
The six dots are unchanged. Every braille display manufactured today raises and lowers the same positions he fixed in a Paris schoolroom in 1824. The technology that drives the pins has moved considerably. The alphabet has not.
