iPhone Duo: Apple's first fold
At 10:07 a.m. Pacific Time on September 9, 2026, at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, three words lit the screen behind John Ternus: One more thing. The audience recognized the phrase; Apple had not used it in years. What appeared next was the iPhone Duo — Apple’s first foldable phone, arriving seven years after Samsung opened the category with the Galaxy Fold in 2019.
Ternus, who had become Apple’s chief executive on September 1 when Tim Cook moved to executive chairman, was hosting his first major keynote. The Duo was the last product announced — deliberately. Every preceding slide, from the iPhone 18 Pro to the new AirPods, was preamble. Apple had been filing patents for folding devices since 2016 — thirty-two in total, twenty granted — and spent the intervening decade watching competitors bend screens and break reviews. The original Galaxy Fold shipped in 2019 with a display that reviewers destroyed within days of receiving it. Apple, characteristically, stayed out.

Unfolded, it was the thinnest iPhone ever made, IP68-rated, starting at $1,999 and shipping October 23 to more than 70 countries.
The “one more thing” callback was not accidental. Jobs had used the phrase for the iPod in 2001 and for the original iPhone in 2007. Ternus reaching for it in 2026, after those announcements had reset their respective industries, was Apple making a quiet claim: this belongs in that line. One observer watching the live stream put it without ceremony: “We’ve had foldables for years, yet today, while watching, it felt like Apple invented foldables all over again.”
Apple did not. Samsung had. Motorola, Google, and Huawei had all taken runs at it. But Apple’s entries tend to do what they usually do — not arrive first, but arrive at the moment when the category stops feeling experimental. Bell nailed a telephone to a wall in 1876. The pocketable version arrived in 1983. The foldable version came in September 2026 — last among the major manufacturers, and rather pleased about it.
